MICASE

This corpus contains 190 hours of academic speech, recorded, transcribed and proofread (1,7 million words). All the data recorded are considered as particular to a university community's educational mission.

1.571 speakers were recorded: 729 male speakers (43% of the corpus) and 842 female speakers (54%), distributed mainly between faculty (49% of the corpus), students (44%), and also staff, researchers, visitors (7%).
Among the speakers, 1.449 (88%) were native english speakers and 122 (12%) were non-native.

Several academic divisions are involved: humanities and arts (26% of the corpus), social sciences and education (25%), biological and health sciences (19%), physical sciences and engineering (21%) and other (9%). The discourse modes are: monologic (33% of the corpus), panel (8%), interactive (42%) and mixed (17%).

It also includes several speech event types: advising, colloquia, discussion sections, dissertation defenses, interviews, labs, large lectures, small lectures, meetings, office hours, seminars, study group, student presentations, service encounters, campus/museum tours, one-to-one tutorials.

The speech data were recorded on Digital Audio Tape. They have been converted to XML format.
