eXtended WordNet
The eXtended WordNet (XWN) is a lexical-semantic network based on Princeton WordNet (lexical reference system).

In a wordnet, which is basically a semantic network, the different lexical categories of words (nouns, verbs,..) are organised into 'synsets' (sets of synonyms). Each synset represents a lexical concept and they can be linked by different types of relation (hyperonymy, antonymy, etc.).

The eXtended WordNet is based on WordNet 2.0, from which informations given in definitional glosses are syntactically developped in order to increase connectivity between synsets and provide computer access to information contained in these definitions.

For that, glosses have been :
- syntactically parsed (part of speech tagging and parsing),
- transformed into logical forms (predicates and arguments assigned to the words),
- each noun, verb, adjective and adverb semantically tagged for semantic disambiguation.

The eXtended WordNet contains a total of 115,424 glosses divided into :
- 79,689 noun synset glosses,
- 13,508 verb synset glosses,
- 18,563 adjective synset glosses
- 3,664 adverb glosses.

It can be used as a Core Knowledge Base for applications such as Information Extraction, Information Retrieval, Summarization, Natural Language Generation, Question Answering, ...
