German Wordnet
GermaNet is a lexical-semantic network that has been integrated into the EuroWordNet (EWN). EuroWordNet includes wordnets for several European languages and each one of them is structured along the same lines as the Princeton WordNet (lexical reference system).
In a wordnet, which is basically a semantic network, the different lexical categories of words (nouns, verbs, ...) are organised into 'synsets' (sets of synonyms). Each synset represents a lexical concept and they can be linked by different types of relation (hyperonymy, antonymy, etc.). For evident purposes, all wordnets resort to the same system of synset identification.
After the EWN project and the creation of EWN German, new versions of GermaNet have been developed, with more synsets and lexical units.
Statistics for GermaNet (version 5.3, April 2010):
- Synsets: 61,659
- Lexical units: 84,586
- Literals: 76,709
- 1.37 Lexical Units per Synset
- Lexical Relations: 3,515
- Conceptual Relations: 73,686
GermaNet is a basic resource for computational linguistics purposes and language engineering applications (machine translation, IE, WSD, knowledge representation, etc.).
GermaNet II is under progress.
