Italian Wordnet
ItalWordNet is a lexical-semantic network that has been developed in the framework of two different research projects: the EuroWordNet (EWN) project and the SI-TAL. EuroWordNet includes wordnets for several European languages and each one of them is structured along the same lines as the Princeton WordNet (lexical reference system).
In a wordnet, which is basically a semantic network, the different lexical categories of words (nouns, verbs,..) are organised into 'synsets' (sets of synonyms). Each synset represents a lexical concept and they can be linked by different types of relation (hyperonymy, antonymy, etc.). For obvious reasons, all wordnets resort to the same system of synset identification.
ItalWordNet is an extension of EWN Italian.
Statistics of ItalWordNet (in 2007):
- Synsets: 50000
- Lemmas: 47000
- Semantic Relations: 130,000
It also contains a terminological wordnet for the economic-financial domain (5,000 synsets).
Since 2003 a terminological wordnet for the maritime domain has also been developed (in connection with IWN).
ItalWordNet is a basic resource for computational linguistics purposes and language engineering applications (machine translation, IE, SWD, knowledge representation, etc.).
The Italian WordNet is distributed through the ELRA catalogue
