The International Corpus of Learner English
This corpus of argumentative essay writing contains over 3.7 million words written by advanced learners of English from 19 different mother tongue backgrounds (Bulgarian, Chinese, Czech, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Tswana, ...). It is divided according to the mother tongue (the target size for each sub-corpus is 200,000 words):
- SPICLE: Spanish ICLE
- PORTICLE: Portuguese ICLE
- BRICLE: Brazilian ICLE
...
The aim of this collaborative project is to compile a corpus of written learner language that can be used as a research tool for analysing written interlanguage grammar, lexis and discourse.
